Musk Says Grok Bot Serving Costs Were Unsustainable as Builders Debate Who Pays for Agents
Day 19 · November 3, 2026 · Singularity Watcher · View on X
AI AGENTS: THE COST OF SERVING GROK BOT
On November 1, Elon Musk, chief executive of SpaceX, gave the first explanation for a sudden squeeze on Grok Bot usage. Replying on X to a user who asked whether usage could be reset after allowances ran out unusually fast that week, he wrote: “The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue.” [1][2]
Grok Bot is SpaceX’s always-on agent product. Each user’s bots share one persistent cloud computer with its own browser, files, and logins, and keep working after the user’s own devices are closed. [3][4]
It is included with paid X Subscription tiers and Cursor plans and draws from a shared weekly usage pool, with prepaid credit or on-demand billing covering use beyond the pool. [4]
TechCrunch reported on November 2 that over Halloween weekend some users found their weekly limits maxed out, with reported usage jumping from as low as 50% to 100%, even without overnight use. Musk had not said how limits would change going forward. [5]
TechCrunch placed this against SpaceX’s finances. In a filing last month, SpaceX said AI makes up 52% of company income, and its renamed “Super Intelligence” division turned a $431 million profit, which would have been higher without $1.2 billion of one-time costs from its acquisition of Cursor. [5]
Littlewolf Labs News, after reading 185 posts on X from October 31 to November 2, reported that xAI does not publish the size of the weekly pool in any unit, and that it found no pricing, documentation, or changelog entry about a change as of the afternoon of November 2. [6]
AI AGENTS: WILL PEOPLE PAY FOR THEM?
On November 2, Dax Raad, a co-founder of Anomaly, the company that builds the open-source coding agent OpenCode, quoted Musk’s reply. He called it “another major reason” his team was not excited about “this shape of product”: “people don’t want to pay for it,” so it has to be a top-of-funnel product leading to something else, which he said he could not yet identify. [7][1]
OpenCode is an MIT-licensed coding agent for the terminal, desktop, and code editors that works with more than 75 model providers. Its website says it has more than 220,000 GitHub stars and is used by over 16 million developers a month. Anomaly’s founders previously built the SST framework. [8][9]
Ryan X. Charles, founder and CEO of Astrohacker, quoted Raad and disagreed: people “will definitely pay for grok bot because it unlocks enormous gains,” but it requires a change in workflow, using AI for everything, that takes time to grapple with psychologically. Astrohacker reposted it. [10][11]
AI AGENTS: CLOUD OR LOCAL
On November 1, Ivan Fioravanti, a technology advisor, investor, and co-founder and board member of CoreView, who describes himself as a local and personal AI ambassador, wrote that Grok Bot is “pretty solid” but that he does not like that it works in the cloud. He said he was waiting for the Hermes mobile app. [12]
Hermes Agent is an open-source agent framework from Nous Research that users run on their own computers or servers. Nous opened a mobile beta for iOS and Android at its NousCon 2026 conference in New York on October 30. The app connects to the user’s own Hermes gateway rather than running the agent on the phone. [13]
Charles quoted Fioravanti and wrote that “cloud is good” and “it’s gotta be in the cloud for ideal UI/UX,” calling it “the gateway drug for humanity” and predicting that billions will use it. Astrohacker reposted it. [14][15]
AI AGENTS: RUNNING A FLEET MORE CHEAPLY
On November 1, Alex, a German full-stack developer, wrote that Grok Bot had replaced Typefully, a tool for drafting and scheduling social posts, for him. [16]
Astrohacker replied that Grok Bot would replace almost every other app for it, but that its cost was the main problem, and that it planned to build its own cloud-agent setup to save money. [17]
On November 2, the X user Riaan replied with specific advice: check the cloud agent settings first. He said his costs fell after setting a 256k context window (he said context over 200k bills at double), medium reasoning, fast mode off, and having the bot pass the model grok-4.7 with those settings explicitly on every launch instead of leaving it on Auto. [18]
Astrohacker thanked him, saying it had not known that was possible. [19]
ASTROHACKER
On November 1, Charles posted a short video with the caption “Welcome to the singularity,” which Astrohacker reposted. The video itself was not reviewed for this record. [20][21]
On November 2, Charles also wrote that his bots “do not care if your content is ai generated or not,” which Astrohacker reposted. [22][23]
